So for those who don’t know, Flow 93.5 FM has been cut and will possibly become a different incarnation of some Top 40 type station (Check out the article in the star).  Don’t we already have too many of those.  I was happy when Flow 93.5 went on air in 1991.  It had the feel of a college station with a stronger signal.  Then came the personalities, then came the slow phase out of Canadian music while quietly replacing it with the same 10 American artists every 30 minutes, all day, every day. Is this what we wanted when it was just an idea.  But like many things that were suppose to own is now lost. Many other communities own their community…we have Eglinton West.  Don’t get me wrong, I love Eglinton West, but who really owns it. During my musical travels I did some shows in parts of Africa and visited African radio and television stations.  Different mind set completely.  So sad when you come “home” and see how we handle things here. I can’t forget how FLOW was the sponsor and exclusive advertiser for the Peace and Unity festival some years ago. Why would you promote a festival that could have had a bigger potential to people who don’t understand the artists performing at the event, and the fact that 95% of those artists had no air play on FLOW. Why didn’t those dollars go to CKLN, CIUT, and CHRY, or even Project Bounce version 3. They’ve been playing all those artists music since the 80′s and those listeners would have appreciated it and supported it.

Now onto CKLN 88.1  What happened here (CRTC).  My peoples told me of what was happening on the inside…not much different from any other station or business on the planet. This is a station that helped boost the careers of many of the artists that we currently or used to listen to.  This was a station that gave you real info about artists, upcoming events, and upcoming releases. Artists and promoters were at home at CKLN (when not dealing with certain politics) . I’ve been there many times to promote, dj, or chill. You have a connection with people who actually listen to the radio and not just have it playing in the background.  People would call in and let you know their thoughts about what was being aired, positive or negative.  The anonymity of radio gives people that confidence of saying anything to the public without being seen…and why some artists should never release another track for any human to hear ever again.

So this brings forth many questions; where do local artists go to jump start their careers, where do visiting artists go to promote an event or release, where do promoters and advertisers go to reach our market, what dial do you turn to on the radio???

Anyone I personally know that’s jumped shipped from Toronto is sitting down reading this and laughing. Why can’t Toronto get it right. But you also have to look at it from the business side, especially as an advertiser in Toronto; that even with exceptional marketing and promotions, your reaching a fraction of 300,000.  Now take those same advertising dollars and market in New York City alone to a fraction of 19,541,453. Yeah. People have mortgages, rent, families, and other expenses to pay for, so spending a dollar on an ad with the return of 7 cents won’t get anyone anywhere.

Why are people shocked when things fall apart.  The staff at the CRTC didn’t wake up one morning and say “Hey let’s upset everyone and shut down some key “urban” resources in the city“.  To be honest, having a creative mind I find this city is slowly phasing towards get a 9-5 job, go home and be quiet.  Sorry can’t be that person. This is why I left my last 9 to 5 years ago to be my own boss.  Just before my departure I saw upper management leave and start another company, middle management sneaking out and getting other jobs. I heard how the real workers came in for their regular shift and then got the boot with “Oh by the way tomorrow is everyone’s last day, thank you and good luck”…really….

FLOW and CKLN didn’t suddenly lose the battle. Did any of our well known artists become famous overnight, no. There were many years of hard work and energy put in to their crafts to get to where they are today…trust me we were all at the same shows and events. So being a dj and working with people in this city, I hear what’s happening before the regular radio listener knows about it.  Some of the people we looked up to were behind things falling part. We all know each other in this city by 1 degree of separation. These recent events are years of back-door negative movements that has also helped give our city the Screwface Capital status (props to Thoe3 for this).

I would be impressed to see everyone come together and create a new positive venture to fill these gaps, but then reality sets in.
